Challenges and Initiatives in Pattachitra Crafts of Odisha

Pattachitra, meaning “cloth painting,” is one of the oldest and most treasured art forms of Odisha. Originating in the heritage village of Raghurajpur, near Puri, this craft dates back over a thousand years. Traditionally used to depict stories of Lord Jagannath, Ramayana, Mahabharata, and regional folklore, it is known for its bold lines, natural colors, mythological themes, and intricate detailing.

The art is practiced on specially treated cloth (patta), palm leaves (talapatra chitra), and walls, using natural pigments derived from stones, leaves, and minerals. Passed through generations, this sacred and symbolic art form continues to be a source of identity and pride for Odisha.

Haven Crafts, a social enterprise led by Rakhi Jain, is working closely with Pattachitra artists from villages like Raghurajpur and Dandasahi to address these challenges through innovation, empathy, and empowerment.
